Carpet is a local-only Mac app. Everything you capture lives on your Mac and nowhere else — we have no servers, no accounts, and no way to see your library. This page explains, plainly, how your data is handled.
The short version
- Carpet runs entirely on your Mac. Your saved items live in a local database in your own user folder (
~/Library/Application Support). - No account, no sign-up, no cloud sync. We never receive your captured content.
- The AI features run on-device using Apple’s built-in models — your notes are never sent to an AI cloud.
- The Mac app has no analytics, no telemetry, no tracking, and no ads. This website uses PostHog to understand basic site usage.
- You can export everything, or delete everything, whenever you want.
What Carpet stores, and where
Carpet keeps the things you choose to save — copied text, links, images, files, notes, and reminders — in a local database and asset folder inside your macOS Application Support directory. That data stays on your device and under your control.
Capturing is opt-in by design. When you copy something, Carpet slides a small card out of the notch, and nothing is saved unless you click Keep. Carpet also ignores clipboard items marked transient or concealed — for example, content copied from a password manager.
We don’t have your data
Carpet has no backend servers and no Carpet account system. We, the developers, never receive, store, or have access to your captured content, your searches, or how you use the app. There is nothing for us to sell, share, or hand over — because none of it ever reaches us.
On-device intelligence
Carpet’s smart features — answering questions about your library, spotting reminders in your notes, reading text out of images (OCR), labelling images, and building the search index — all run locally on your Mac using Apple’s built-in, on-device models. Your content is processed on your device and is not sent to any external or cloud AI service.
The few connections Carpet makes
Carpet is local-first, but a handful of features do reach the internet. None of them send us your data or your library:
- Link previews. When you save a link, Carpet fetches that page’s own title, image, and favicon (and, for YouTube, its public oEmbed data) directly from the source site — the same request your browser makes when you open the page. There is no Carpet proxy in between.
- App updates. Carpet checks for new versions and downloads them from our public GitHub releases. It is an ordinary web request and carries no personal information.
- X bookmark sync (optional). If you install the companion browser extension, it reads only your own X bookmarks page — the data the page already loaded — while you are on x.com, and passes it to Carpet on your Mac, which then downloads the tweet’s media. It never logs in for you, never uses X’s API, never handles your credentials, and never sends anything to us.
As with any internet request, the destination (the page you saved, GitHub, or X) can see your IP address — but your Carpet library is never transmitted to us or exposed to anyone.
Website analytics
Carpet’s Mac app contains no analytics, telemetry, crash reporters, advertising SDKs, or fingerprinting. This website uses PostHog analytics to understand basic site usage and improve the landing page. PostHog is configured to create person profiles only for identified users.
You’re in control of your data
- Export. Export your entire vault to a
.zipat any time — every item as a readable file, plus a JSON manifest. - Delete. Remove any item, or clear your whole library, from inside the app.
- Erase completely. Deleting Carpet and its Application Support folder permanently removes all of your data from your Mac.
Buying Carpet
If you buy a Carpet license on this website, your payment is processed by Dodo Payments, our payment provider. Card and billing details are handled by Dodo under their own privacy policy; we never see or store your card information. We use the email address you provide only to send your license and receipt — not for marketing without your consent.
Children’s privacy
Carpet is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect any information from them.
Changes to this policy
If we change how Carpet handles data, we will update this page and the “Last updated” date above. Material changes will be reflected here before they take effect.
